White Cube has announced its global representation of American sculptor Richard Hunt, born in 1935 in Chicago. Hunt, a pivotal figure in 20th century sculpture, will present his first solo exhibition at the New York–based gallery in spring 2024.
With a career spanning over seven decades, Hunt has held more than 150 solo exhibitions and installed over 160 large-scale public sculptures globally. In 1971, he made history at age 35 by becoming the first African American sculptor to be granted a retrospective at MoMA in New York.
Hunt’s work, primarily in metal, deeply engages with biological sciences and the natural world. His sculptures are noted for amalgamating industrial and natural elements, employing surreal and abstract themes. Some of Hunt’s notable projects include Swing Low (2016) for the National Museum of African American History and Culture and The Light of Truth (2021), a tribute to Ida B. Wells in Chicago.
“Richard has been a giant hiding in plain sight for decades, and it is a privilege to have the opportunity to work with him at White Cube,” said Sukanya Rajaratnam, global director of strategic market initiatives at the gallery. “He has more public monuments in the U.S. than any other sculptor, and his ability to thread the history of 20-century sculpture with his own deeply personal experience as a Black man is nothing short of profound. His sculptures often appear to soar, and the metaphor speaks to his core belief as to what art means to him, an avenue and opportunity for freedom.”
In addition to his solo exhibition, White Cube will also present Hunt’s Years of Pilgrimage (1999) at Art Basel in Miami Beach 2023. Over the years, the artist has been honored with several prestigious awards, including the Guggenheim Fellowship and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Sculpture Center.
