Wang Tuo, a Chinese artist who works across film, painting, and installation, has won the 2023 Sigg Prize. The artist was nominated for his video series The Northeast Tetralogy (2018–2021), a compelling blend of historical and fictional narratives, and is on view at the Sigg Prize 2023 exhibition at M+.
Wang Tuo, born in 1984 in Changchun, China, has received numerous accolades, including the OCAT x KADIST Emerging Media Artist Residency Program in 2020 and the 10th Three Shadows Photography Award in 2018. He also attended a residency at Queens Museum in New York from 2015 to 2017.
Wang’s work often delves into Chinese modern history, cultural archives, and mythology to create speculative narratives that blur the lines between reality and fiction, such as in his recent solo exhibition “Wang Tuo: The Second Interrogation” at Blindspot Gallery, Hong Kong in 2023. His technique, likened to novel writing, involves a practice of interweaving historical footage or documents into these stories, exploring the suppressed memories and traumas of recent Chinese history.
The Sigg Prize, initiated by M+ in 2018, aims to recognize and promote diverse artistic practices across China, and awards the winner HK$500,000 ($64,000).
Wang’s video series will be on view at the Sigg Prize 2023 exhibition at M+ until January 14th, alongside works from the other shortlisted artists Jes Fan, Miao Ying, Xie Nanxing, Trevor Yeung, and Yu Ji.
