Sonia Boyce, who initially rose to prominence in the 1980s as part of the British Black arts movement, has been awarded the honor of Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in King Charles III’s U.K. New Years Honours list for 2024. This recognition follows her representation of the U.K. at the Venice Biennale in 2022.
In 2019, Boyce received an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) for her contributions to art, following her MBE (Member of the British Empire) honor in 2007.
Born in London in 1962, Boyce emerged as a critical figure in the British Black arts movement in the early 1980s. Her work spans film, photography, print, installation, and sound and has been pivotal in exploring and questioning societal norms and cultural narratives, especially concerning race and gender.
As the first Black woman to represent Britain at the Venice Biennale, Boyce presented Feeling Her Way (2022), which won the Golden Lion for best national exhibition. The installation will tour Canada in 2024, appearing at the PHI Foundation in Montreal in May and at the Toronto Biennial in September.
In May, Boyce will present new work filmed in Bergamo, Italy for the city’s Palazzo della Ragione. Later in the year, the artist will present a solo exhibition at Whitechapel Gallery in London, conceived in dialogue with Whitechapel’s concurrent survey of the Brazilian artist Lygia Clark.
Hauser & Wirth recently announced its inaugural solo exhibition with Boyce, to be held in New York in 2025. Boyce’s work is featured in collections including the Tate and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and others.
