Four international artists have been shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize 2024: VALIE EXPORT, the team of Gauri Gill & Rajesh Vangad, Lebohang Kganye, and Hrair Sarkissian. This revered prize, initiated in 1996 by The Photographers’ Gallery in London, annually recognizes artists who have mounted profound photography exhibitions in the past year. The winner will be announced on May 16, 2024.

VALIE EXPORT, a prominent Austrian artist since the 1960s, critically engages with women’s societal roles, often confronting patriarchal media standards. Her shortlisted project is the exhibition, “VALIE EXPORT – The Photographs,” which was on view at Fotomuseum Winterthur in Switzerland earlier this year.

Gauri Gill & Rajesh Vangad have been nominated for their project “Fields of Sight,” a blend of photography and traditional Warli painting published by Edition Patrick Frey. The project, which began in 2013, seeks to critique environmental issues, decolonization, and politics. Their experimental partnership encourages viewers to explore the multifaceted experiences of Warli life.

Lehobang Kgnaye, a South African artist, combines personal and communal history through her photography. Her experimental installation works foster an intersection between memory and fantasy, complete with silhouettes, cut-outs, puppets, shadows, and ghosts fashioned from materials taken from photo albums. Her exhibition “Haufi nyana? I’ve come to take you home,” previously on view at Foam in Amsterdam, explores the complex narratives in South African culture post-apartheid.

Hrair Sarkissian’s “The Other Side of Silence,” which ran from November 2022 to May 2023 at Bonnefanten Museum in Maastricht, The Netherlands, delivered a contemplative look at trauma, examining the socio-political landscapes in his Syrian and Armenian heritage. Through his large-scale photographs, moving image works, sculptures, sound works, and installations, Sarkissian offers a striking dichotomy between violence and peace within the diasporic experience.

The Photographers’ Gallery will present shortlisted projects in London from February 2, 2024 to June 2, 2024, before moving to the Börse Photography Foundation in Eschborn/Frankfurt between June 15th and September 15th. The prize winner takes home £30,000 ($36,500), and runners-up each receive £5,000 ($6,100).

The 2024 jury included Rahaab Allana from the Alkazi Foundation for the Arts; Quentin Bajac of Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume, Paris; Anne-Marie Beckmann from the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation; documentary photographer Laura El-Tantawy; and Shoair Mavlian of The Photographers’ Gallery, London, serving as the voting Chair.

“This year’s shortlist reflects the exhibitions programmed and photobooks published in Europe in the past 12 months,” Mavlian said. “It brings together a range of important themes showing the breadth of contemporary practice, such as feminist histories and performance, de-colonial histories, contemporary conflict and displacement, and indigenous rights.”
