Jessica Silverman has announced its representation of Beverly Fishman, a distinguished artist known for exploring medication’s impact on the human experience. The gallery will also present her geometric and sculptural works at Art Basel Miami Beach 2023.
Born in Philadelphia in 1955, Fishman has spent over two decades creating art that takes inspiration from science, society, and human consciousness. Her works, often derived from the shapes of mass-produced pills, serve as a commentary on the prevalence and impact of medical drugs in modern life. Fishman has been an artist-in-residence at Cranbrook Academy of Art, is recognized as a Guggenheim Fellow, and is an academician of the National Academy of Design.
The artist meticulously creates her work using what she calls a “slow and ridiculously laborious” process that involves digitizing her small pencil drawings and experimenting with collages before creating the final bas-relief pieces in wood. These are then cut with CNC routers and painted in various pastel and bright colors.
Fishman’s work is in the collections of the Tate, Centre Pompidou, Cranbrook Art Museum, the Pérez Art Museum Miami, and the Detroit Institute of Art, among others.
