Elliot Erwitt, a photographer known for his iconic portraits of celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, has passed away at 95. Magnum Photos, which Erwitt was a part of, announced his death on Thursday.
Born in Paris in 1928 to Russian parents, Erwitt moved to the United States in 1939. There, he developed a passion for photography and filmmaking at a young age. He studied photography at the Los Angeles City College until 1948, when he transferred to The New School for Social Research (known today as The New School). Shortly after he graduated from school in 1950, he was drafted into the U.S. military.
Known for his absurd and ironic black and white photos, Erwitt earned recognition through his images of key figures in cultural history. His documentary photographs captured everything from Richard Nixon’s intense interactions with Nikita Khrushchev to dogs across New York City. His artistic inspiration came from Henri Cartier-Bresson, and like his mentor, Erwitt had a knack for creating compositions on the fly.
Erwitt joined Magnum Photos in 1953, shortly after its foundation by Robert Capa. His assignments took him across the globe, and his photographs have become widely recognized, often without his name attached. Over the years, the photographer has presented solo exhibitions at Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Museo Reina Sofia, Art Institute of Chicago, and International Center of Photography (ICP).
