Wim Wenders will release 3D documentary “Anselm” on artist Anselm Kiefer. https://ift.tt/x67QFoN

Anselm, a 3D documentary on the artist Anselm Kiefer directed by filmmaker and photographer Wim Wenders, is scheduled for simultaneous release in the U.K. and the U.S. on December 8th. The film, which was featured as a special screening at Cannes 2023, represents Wenders’s second foray into 3D filmmaking following his 2011 documentary Pina, which featured choreographer Pina Bausch.

The documentary offers an in-depth exploration of Kiefer’s work, taking viewers inside the artist’s extensive warehouse. This setting serves as the backdrop for the creation of Kiefer’s large-scale, epic paintings and sculptures, which incorporate a variety of materials such as lead, concrete, glass, textiles, plant materials, books, and fire.

Wenders explained that the film resulted from a friendship that began in 1991 between the two German figures, each of whom was each pulled towards the discipline of the other: “This mixture between the painter who would like to make films and the filmmaker who would like to become a painter…there was something there,” Wenders said.

Filmed over two years, Anselm traces Kiefer’s path from his native Germany to his current residence in France. The film connects the stages of Kiefer’s life with key locations that have been influential in his career, which has spanned over five decades. Anselm is presented as a comprehensive study of Kiefer’s work, delving into themes of human existence, the cyclical nature of history, and his inspirations from literature, poetry, philosophy, and religion.
