Beatles painting sells for $1.7 million at auction. https://ift.tt/kN8Sybe

On February 1st, a painting by The Beatles titled Images of a Woman (1966) sold for $1.7 million at Christie’s. The piece, part of the auction house’s “Exceptional Sale” in New York City, far surpassed its pre-sale estimate of $400,000–$600,000.

The Beatles painted Images of a Woman in 1966 during their Japan tour, when local authorities confined the band to the Tokyo Hilton’s presidential suite for safety reasons. Using art materials that were gifts from several local visitors, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr collaborated on the piece. Each Beatle started from a corner and met in the middle, where a table lamp anchored the paper and illuminated their work.

Photographs by Robert Whitaker, the tour’s photographer, document the Beatles working on the painting. Initially owned by Tetsusaburo Shimoyama, a prominent figure in the Japanese entertainment sector, the artwork later changed hands several times before being sold at Christie’s by Tracks Ltd UK, a leading dealer of Beatles memorabilia. The new, current owner has not been disclosed.

Images of a Woman features the signatures of Lennon, McCartney, Harrison, and Starr around the place where the lamp was positioned, symbolizing their collaborative effort.
