The Saltzman Prize, a new award for emerging photographers founded by philanthropist and artist Lisa Saltzman, has announced 10 artists for its inaugural shortlist. This award, established in partnership with the Center for Photography at Woodstock (CPW), includes a $10,000 prize and a solo exhibition at PHOTOFAIRS New York at the Javits Center this September.
The inaugural shortlist presents an international group of emerging artists, from the French Nigerian multidisciplinary artist and researcher Wilfred Ukpong to the San Francisco–based Trina Robinson. Other than Upkong, the nominees are largely ultra-contemporary artists, including New York–based Caroline Tompkins, Ghanaian photographer Eric Gyamfi, French Vietnamese artist Nhu Xuan Hua, Chinese artist Hailun Ma, Upstate New York–based photographer Rory Mulligan, Brooklyn-based Keisha Scarville, Guinean American artist Hady Barry, and Alaska-born Patrice Aphrodite Helmar.
These artists were selected by a notable group of nominators, including MoMA curator Oluremi Onabanjo, British curator Mark Sealy, New York–based curator Lyle Rexer, New York Times Opinion photo director Jacqueline Bates, and legendary photographer Deana Lawson.
The winner, to be announced in March, will be selected by a jury comprising photography luminaries such as MacArthur fellow Deborah Willis, president of the Magnum Foundation Susan Meiselas, and the director of Asia Society Yasufumi Nakamori.
