The shortlist for Trafalgar Square’s Fourth Plinth 2026 and 2028 commissions has been unveiled, featuring seven artists: Chila Kumari Singh Burman, Gabriel Chaile, Ruth Ewan, Thomas J Price, Veronica Ryan, Tschabalala Self, and Andra Ursuţa. Their proposed maquettes are currently on display at the National Gallery until March 17th. This announcement marks the fourth Plinth’s 25th anniversary of showcasing contemporary art in Trafalgar Square, Central London.

“The Fourth Plinth is renowned across the globe for bringing world-class contemporary art to the heart of London,” said Justine Simons OBE, deputy mayor for culture at Creative Industries and 24hr London Team. “I’m delighted that our shortlisted artists have provided such thought-provoking pieces. For 25 years, the sculptures on the Fourth Plinth have sparked interest and debate—bringing out the art critic in everybody. I’ve no doubt that these proposals will continue that fantastic tradition.”

The proposals range from British artist Chila Burman’s The Smile You Send Returns to You, highlighting her father’s journey from India to the U.K., to Argentine sculptor Gabriel Chaile’s Hornero, inspired by the Rufous Hornero bird, an Argentine national symbol. Scotland–based Ruth Ewan’s Believe in Discontent draws on the legacy of suffragist Charlotte Despard, while British sculptor Thomas J Price’s Ancient Feelings presents a collective community portrait.

Former Turner Prize winner Veronica Ryan’s Sweet Potatoes and Yams are Not the Same would build on the artist’s common use of everyday objects, and rising American artist Tschabalala Self’s Lady in Blue celebrates the contemporary everywoman. Romanian sculptor Andra Ursuţa’ss Untitled would feature a life-sized figure on horseback, reflecting on public sculpture and commemoration.

The public is encouraged to engage with the proposals through the Bloomberg Connects app, contributing their opinions to the selection process. The winners will be announced in March, with the installations planned for 2026 and 2028.

In September 2024, Improntas by Teresa Margolles will be the next sculpture to adorn the Fourth Plinth, featuring hundreds of plaster casts of trans faces to honor their journey and courage.
