A $2 million Richard Serra drawing led the slate of reported sales from the VIP day of Frieze L.A.’s fifth edition, which opened yesterday. The large-scale drawing was sold by Gladstone Gallery, which also announced the sales of a photograph by Carrie Mae Weems and a painting by Aaron Gilbert for $125,000 apiece.
The fair, which is taking place at the Santa Monica Airport for the second year, saw a star-studded list of attendees turn out on its VIP day. Guests included Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert Downey Jr., Will Ferrell, Owen Wilson, Monetta White, Jessica Biel, and Thelma Golden.
Other notable six and seven-figure sales reported by galleries at the fair included:
- Thaddaeus Ropac’s announced sales were led by a work by Robert Longo for $1.6 million and a work by Anselm Kiefer for €1.3 million ($1.4 million).
- Hauser & Wirth’s sales included an Ed Clark painting for $950,000, a work by Charles Gaines for $795,000, a painting by Frank Bowling for $800,000, and a painting by Rita Ackermann for $425,000.
- Pace Gallery’s announced sales were led by a painting by Loie Hollowell for $450,000, an oil painting by Tony Smith for $250,000, and a painting by Li Songsong for $138,000.
- White Cube’s sales included an Antony Gormley sculpture for £500,000 ($631,000), a painting by Lynne Drexler for $150,000, and a Tracey Emin neon for £100,000 ($126,000).
- Lisson Gallery’s sales included two works by Olga de Amaral for $250,000 each, a Rodney Graham painting for $120,000, a work by Hélio Oiticica for $120,000, and a Hugh Hayden work for $110,000.
- Casey Kaplan’s solo presentation of Jordan Casteel yielded sales in the range of $300,000 to $450,000.
- Roberts Projects sold a painting by Amoako Boafo in the range of $300,000 to $400,000.
- David Kordansky Gallery sold out their booth of works by Sam McKinniss, with prices ranging from $95,000 to $140,000.
- Tina Kim Gallery sold a work by Pacita Abad for between $250,000 and $300,000 and a piece by Suki Seokyeong Kang for between $75,000 and $100,000.
- James Fuentes’s sales included a painting by Kikuo Saito for $120,000 and a painting by Geoffrey Holder for “over” $100,000.
- Lehmann Maupin reported the sales of 15 works from its booth which spotlighted six female artists. Two textile works by Billie Zangewa were the highest priced, going for prices from $125,000 to $250,000.
- David Zwirner’s sales included a Huma Bhabha sculpture for $650,000, two John McCracken sculptures each priced between $450,000 and $500,000 apiece, and a Steven Shearer painting for $480,000.
