French artist Abraham Poincheval will spend the entire 2024 Paris Olympics sealed in a transparent bottle, floating on the Canal Saint-Denis near the national stadium. Poincheval has titled the performance La Bouteille, and says the work addresses themes of privacy and isolation against the backdrop of the world’s largest sporting event.
The bottle, designed by Poincheval, is a transparent structure measuring 19 feet in length and just over 6 feet in diameter. For 10 days, the bottle will act as a living space for the artist, who is attempting to draw attention to society’s relationship with public and private space, particularly to how people post their lives on social media. Inside, Poincheval is equipped with basic necessities such as food, water, and solar-powered electricity. The giant bottle will also be equipped with a compost toilet.
“I am going to experience the excitement, the moments of joy, and the moments of disappointment too,” the artist told Agence France-Presse (AFP). He underscored that the performance intends to address “how we live knowing we’re being observed at all times.”
Born in 1972 in Alençon, France, Poincheval is known for his endurance art. He has previously presented several performances in which he confined himself to extreme or isolated conditions. For example, in the past, he spent 13 days inside a stuffed bear at the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature in 2014, a week inside a hollow rock at the Palais de Tokyo in 2017, and a journey in a bottle (the same one, in fact) up the Rhône River from Lyon to Switzerland in 2015.
This ongoing work builds on a long tradition of 20th- and 21st-century endurance performance art, placing him alongside artists like Chris Burden, Tehching Hsieh, and Marina Abramović. For instance, Abramović spent 12 days without food in a three-unit “house” in Sean Kelly Gallery for The House with the Ocean View (2002).
