Hong Kong gallery De Sarthe has announced it will relocate to a larger space in the region this fall. The new gallery will open just down the road, in the Wong Chuk Hang neighborhood, on September 20th.
The 10,000-square-foot gallery is located in Vita Tower, in the city’s Southside art district, an area with growing numbers of galleries opening. De Sarthe’s previous space in the neighborhood opened there in 2017. De Sarthe’s new gallery will include separate exhibition areas dedicated to contemporary art and 20th-century masterworks. Founded in Paris in 1977, the gallery has operated spaces in the United States and across Asia. This year, De Sarthe will celebrate its 15th anniversary in Hong Kong.
Pascal de Sarthe, the gallery’s founder, called the move “a major expansion that will allow us to offer larger and more ambitious programs.” He added, in a statement: “The world is evolving rapidly, and technology is reshaping how art is made and experienced. Yet, even in this digital age, for the time being, the physical gallery remains vital, a space where artists and audiences can engage in meaningful dialogue, whether the work is digital or physical.”
Recent years have seen the gallery’s contemporary program focus on artists exploring the social implications of new technologies. At the same time, its advisory business has remained active in the international Modern and post-war markets. The new location’s parallel spaces will aim to juxtapose contemporary works with historically significant art, offering viewers a broader contextual lens.
The gallery closed its current space on July 27th and will be undergoing renovations on the new space until September 19th. Details on the inaugural exhibitions will be announced ahead of the reopening.
