Dulwich Picture Gallery in London has opened “Hokusai: Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji from the Iuchi Collection.” According to the museum, it is the first time the complete series by Katsushika Hokusai has gone on view in the U.K. The show runs through January 17, 2027.

The prints come from the Iuchi Collection, on deposit at the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo. The show includes all 46 designs: the original 36, plus 10 added after the series proved a hit.

Hokusai made the woodblock prints between roughly 1830 and 1833, when he was in his seventies. Each shows the mountain from a different place, season, or moment of daily life. He used Prussian blue, a pigment newly imported from Europe, to striking effect.

The show includes The Great Wave (Under the Wave off Kanagawa) (ca. 1830–32), as well as Red Fuji (Clear Day with a Southern Breeze) in a rare variant that, the gallery said, has never been seen in the U.K. A blue-toned print of the same design is also on view.

This series of Hokusai prints has shown strong art market appeal. In March 2024, a complete set of the series sold at Christie’s in New York for $3.56 million, an auction record for the artist, as Artsy reported. The collector Jitendra V. Singh assembled the set over 11 years. The sale topped the previous high, $2.76 million, paid in 2023 for a single impression of The Great Wave.

It’s a strong moment for Hokusai in the U.K. The Whitworth in Manchester is also presenting “Beneath the Great Wave: Hokusai and Hiroshige” through Nov. 15. That show pairs ukiyo-e prints by Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige, with The Great Wave, on loan from a private collection, at its center.
