Independent Curators International (ICI) will present Uzodinma Iweala, CEO of the Manhattan cultural venue The Africa Center, with the distinguished Leo Award during its fall benefit and auction on October 26th.
The Leo Award, given to individuals and organizations that have profoundly impacted the contemporary art scene, recognizes The Africa Center’s transformative role under Iweala’s leadership. During his time as CEO, the author, who wrote Beasts of No Nation, has contributed to transforming a Western perception of Africa through his rich programming at The Africa Center over the past three decades, including the exhibition “States of Becoming” in 2022.
Remarking on the announcement, ICI executive and artistic director Renaud Proch commented, “Uzo’s vision and the values manifested in the Center—collaboration, empowerment, global solidarity, generative thinking—resonate in so many ways with ICI’s own mission.” For the next three years, ICI and The Africa Center will collaborate on annual talks and programs showcasing African art developments.
The ICI Fall Benefit, intended to engage collectors and curators with emerging artists, will host a live and silent auction, which are now open for bidding on Artsy. The auction includes works by Elias Sime, Zanele Muholi, Keltie Ferris, Katherine Bernhardt, Stephanie Temma Hier, and many more. Some highlights include Tammy Nguygen’s fantastical watercolor Angel on Mount Purgatory No. 1 (2023); Amoako Boafo’s portrait Green Durag (2022); Tahnee Lonsdale’s spectral study in abstraction All That We Can’t See (2021); and Lulu Varona’s meticulously threaded textile Out of the Blue (2023).
The event’s proceeds will support ICI’s initiatives, promoting global art community growth and diverse curatorial practices.
