Hauser & Wirth will open a new gallery space this week in SoHo’s Cast Iron District with a solo exhibition of American artist Barbara Chase-Riboud.
Chase-Riboud, a Paris-based sculptor, poet, and novelist, will present sculptures and works on paper for her first exhibition since her representation by the gallery began earlier this year. She recently showed her work with Hauser & Wirth at Frieze London, one of Artsy’s best booths from the fair. At the new show, titled “The Three Josephines,” Chase-Ribaud’s works pay tribute to the multifaceted life of Josephine Baker—a World War II secret agent, civil rights activist, and performer. Anchoring the exhibition, three patinated bronze sculptures comprised of folded metal and vibrant textiles from Chase-Riboud’s “La Musica” series embody Baker’s spirit.
Born in 1939, Chase-Riboud is recognized as the youngest artist to have work acquired by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) at 15 years old. The Hauser & Wirth show opens shortly after two major museum exhibitions, including “Infinite Folds” at Serpentine North in London and “The Encounter” at the MoMA, and will be on view from November 8th to December 23rd.
Hauser & Wirth’s SoHo location in 134 Wooster marks a return to a neighborhood with deep art history roots, moving into the space previously occupied by Gagosian in the 90s. The new coalition marks the Swiss–born gallery’s third space in New York City, after Chelsea and the Upper East Side.
