The Takeaway: Phillips’s New York evening sale, a two-part sale hammering below its low estimate at $128 million ($154.6 million with fees), started with energetic bidding on works from the early 20th century but quickly lost steam. Still, Jadé Fadojutimi broke her artist record with Quirk my mannerism (2021) during a rare moment of excitement, selling for significantly above its $800,000 high estimate at $1.9 million.
Kicking off the auction, Wassily Kandinsky’s Entwurf zu Komposition IV (1911) fetched $889,000, well above its $700,000 high estimate. This sale was followed by two more impressive sales, including Amedeo Modigliani’s Tête de jeune fille (Louise) (1915) and Gino Severini’s Mare = Ballerina (1914)—hammering for nearly four times its high estimate at $444,500.
However, by the first quarter of the night, several lots struggled to reach their low estimates and many failed to surpass it. These pieces include Pablo Picasso’s Femme en corset lisant un livre (1914–18), hammering below its $15 million low estimate at $14.7 million, and Joan Mitchell’s Untitled (1953) selling below its low estimate of $8 million for $7.8 million.
The top five sales were as follows:
- Gerhard Richter’s Abstraktes Bild (636) (1987) sold for $34 million.
- Fernand Léger’s Le 14 juillet (c. 1911–12) sold for $17.6 million.
- Pablo Picasso’s Femme en corset lisant un livre (1914–18) sold for $14.7 million.
- Georges Braque’s La Bouteille de Bass (1911–12) sold for $8.4 million.
- Joan Mitchell’s Untitled (1953) sold for $7.8 million.
