Brent Sikkema, founder of the New York gallery Sikkema Jenkins & Co. has passed away at the age of 75. He was found on Monday in his Rio de Janeiro apartment with multiple stab wounds, according to several news outlets.
Sikkema’s death was confirmed by the gallery, which commended his decades of work in galleries from 1971 until the present day. “The gallery grieves this tremendous loss and will continue on in his spirit,” the email, which was signed by partners Meg Malloy and Michael Jenkins, along with the gallery’s staff, read.
Sikkema, who was born in 1948, made an outsize impact on the art scene in New York and beyond through his gallery, which was originally named Wooster Gardens and located in SoHo. After moving to Chelsea in 1999, its name became Sikkema Jenkins & Co. The gallery represents artists such as Louis Fratino and Jeffrey Gibson, and offered key, early shows to other leading contemporary artists such as Deana Lawson and Mark Bradford.
On Instagram, artist Kara Walker, who is represented by the gallery, shared her condolences, describing Sikkema as “My champion and the most courageous, funny and compassionate gentleman to ever leave the farm.”
