The German pavilion at the 2024 Venice Biennale will feature the works of Yael Bartana and Ersan Mondtag. The exhibition, entitled “Thresholds” and curated by Çağla Ilk, is poised to explore the themes of national identity, trauma, and the intersections of past and future. The 60th Venice Biennale, titled “Foreigners Everywhere,” will run from April 20th to November 24th.

Yael Bartana, an artist who lives in Berlin and Amsterdam, is known for her thought-provoking films, installations, and public monuments. Her contribution to the pavilion will consider possibilities for survival in a catastrophic present. Bartana’s work reimagines histories to envision shared futures and has been exhibited in prestigious venues like the Jewish Museum Berlin and the Stedelijk Museum. She previously represented Poland at the 2011 Venice Biennale.

Ersan Mondtag, a Berlin-based director and artist renowned for his work in theater, music, and installation, will present historically focused work that revives past eras as living environments. His multidisciplinary work has been celebrated in institutions like Deutsche Oper Berlin and Museum für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt.

Germany’s contribution to the Biennale will also include a presentation outside of its pavilion featuring works by Michael Akstaller, Nicole L’Huillier, Robert Lippok, and Jan St. Werner. This work will be showcased on the island of La Certosa, off the coast of Italy.
